Grain Is a Finish, Not a Fix
Banding is noise you barely turn up until it vanishes. Grain is noise you turn up until you can feel it - a finish for flat colors and photos, now on every background.
Most of what gets written about noise on a cover is about making it go away. The gradient banding version is a defect story: a smooth fade breaks into visible stripes, and you turn a little noise up just far enough to dissolve them, then wish it invisible. This is the other direction entirely. Grain as a finish is noise you turn up until you can feel it - a fine, analog texture laid over the background so the cover reads as a treated, made thing instead of a raw fill. Film grain is the literal grain of developed film, formed from silver-halide crystals, so a touch of it carries a shot-and-chosen quality that a perfectly smooth digital surface never will. Same slider, opposite intent, opposite amount.
The catch used to be that you could only do it on a gradient. As of v0.18.0 Lede’s Noise control runs on every background - so the two surfaces this is really about, flat colors and photos, are finally in play.
Flat solids: the strongest case
Start with the surface that needs it most: a single flat color. It is the most default-looking background there is - the fill a blank template ships with, the one nobody styled. And it is the one place grain can only ever be a finish, never a fix, because a single flat color cannot band - there is no transition to break. Whatever grain you add to a solid is pure surface: a little tooth that turns a swatch into a cover.


Until recently you had to fake this - nudge the color into a barely-there gradient just to unlock the Noise slider. Now you grain the solid directly. Take a flat 2026 palette, set your heading, and turn Grain up until the color stops reading as a default and starts reading as a decision. A type-only cover leans on this hardest: when the words are the whole image, the surface they sit on is the only thing keeping the frame from looking empty.
Photos: grade, then grain
A photo cover is a two-step finish, and grain is the second step. First you grade it - set the tone, the contrast, the temperature, push it warm or cool until the mood lands. That is the color. Grain is the surface. A light film grain over a graded photo gives it an analog tooth a clean export lacks: it mattes a too-slick stock or AI-generated frame so it reads shot instead of generated, and it pulls the whole backdrop into one treated surface.


The grain rides over the photo and the darken overlay, under the type - it textures the background, never the words. And there is a quiet bonus: because grain is fine noise, it also softens the faint banding that creeps into smooth skies and the blocky artifacts lossy compression leaves in flat areas. Take that as a side effect, not the reason. The reason is the look.
Which type to reach for
Lede gives you four noise types, and for a finish you rank them by how they look, not by how well they hide - the reverse of the banding case.
- Grain is the one to reach for first: the boldest, most film-like overlay, the texture you actually see and feel.
- Fine is the same character turned quiet - a subtler tooth for when Grain is too much.
- Pixel is a deliberate choice, not a default - an ordered, structured grid that reads retro or halftone. Use it when you want the texture to look digital on purpose.
- Blue is the near-invisible one. It is the cleanest and the least visible, which makes it the least useful here: if you cannot see the texture, it is not finishing anything. (It is the type you want in the banding case, where invisible is exactly the goal.)
How much
Turn it up only until the surface stops reading flat - on a solid, until the color gains a tooth; on a photo, until it reads shot - and then stop. Past that you are not finishing the cover, you are sanding it. One non-obvious thing: the four types do not match strength at the same percentage, so a number that looks right for Grain will look like nothing on Blue. Set each one by eye, not by reusing a value.
Make it in Lede
It is the same control either way. Open the editor, set a background - solid, gradient, or a photo - and the Noise slider sits right under it in the Background panel. Drag it up and the four texture tabs appear: Grain, Fine, Blue, Pixel. (On a photo the slider waits until you have actually loaded an image.) What you see bakes straight into the export - it is a real texture layer captured at full export scale, not a preview trick.
That is the whole move. On a flat color or a graded photo, grain is the surface. One is noise you barely turn up to fix a problem; this is noise you turn up to finish a cover.
